Ceiling stains after a freeze
The useful clue is timing. A stain that shows up the morning after a cold night and a sunny roof usually started at the eave, while a stain in every November rain is more often wind-driven water at a flashing.

Water at the exterior wall after a thaw
If the drip lines up with the outside wall, start at the soffit and the first shingle courses. That path is meltwater held against the starter, not a hole in the middle of the field.

A valley that ponds when the sun hits
Valleys collect slush first. We look at the metal lap and the underlayment under the cut shingles before calling the whole slope worn out.

Attic frost that looks like a roof leak
Frost on nails and wet insulation can drip with no shingle failure. When the hatch is safe, we check for a warm chase or a blocked soffit before opening the roof.

Meltwater versus wind-driven rain
Wind-driven rain can wet the same ceiling in November with no freeze at all. A thaw stain usually shows up after a cold night and a bright morning, often right at the exterior wall. The ice dam is the frozen ridge; the leak is the water it refuses to let past.
If the deck is sound, the work is a local ice dam repair at the eave, not a whole-roof tear-off. Soft plywood in that bay gets replaced before new underlayment goes down.

Read the stain first
We start inside if water is active: which wall, which ceiling bay, and whether the drip lines up with the eave or a valley.
Open only the eave courses
Shingles come off the first rows so the crew can see the deck and the old underlayment lap. The rest of the plane stays put unless the deck is soft.
Relay the eave and the starter
Self-adhered underlayment goes down the eave and into the valley transition, then the starter and shingles go back so water sheds out instead of sideways.
What the estimate says about warranty
Qualifying labor is the 5-year workmanship line. Eligible materials follow the manufacturer term, up to 30 years, and both are written on the estimate before you approve the work.
